Harald Breivik is full Professor emeritus of Anaesthesiology at the University of Oslo, and a consultant at the Department of Pain Management and Research, Oslo University Hospital and Rikshospitalet, Oslo, Norway.

Professor Breivik is a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain. He is also a founding member and past president of the Scandinavian Association for the Study of Pain, founding president of the Norwegian Pain Society, and past president of the European Federation of IASP-Chapters. 

Professor Breivik has published about 350 articles and book chapters on anaesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine, pain relief, physiology and pathophysiology. Professor Breivik is founding Editor-in-Chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Pain (since 2009). He is Knight 1st Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav.
